Why Was There No Sequel To The Golden Compass? – Ricky Gervais, who hosts the 2020 Golden Globes, raised more than a few eyebrows. Reason enough to take a good look at what it’s all about.
January 5, Beverly Hilton Hotel: Ricky Gervais hosts the Golden Globes for the fifth and final time. He doesn’t care, never did. Neither does NBC. Despite, or rather
Why Was There No Sequel To The Golden Compass?
His casual approach meant that expectations for his work were mixed. First, the last time Gervais received this honor in 2016, he dragged much of the public through the dust, and second, his sketch wasn’t very well received at the time (except for Harvey Weinstein who snarled when it was a joke about production companies who pay movie prices). However, this time expectations were not met – they were exceeded. Instead of a good old easy scramble, he whipped out his six-incher and knocked out just about every major nanny from Judi Dench to Leo DiCaprio.

Gervais began his star-studded diatribe with a dig at Felicity Huffman, saying he “came here tonight in a limo and she did the license plate,” alluding to her potential jail time for bribing her daughter into going to college. After calling Joe Pesci “Baby Yoda” (and then asking not to get arrested for it) and calling 2019 a “big year for pedophile movies” as The Two Popes called, he wasn’t even halfway through his opening monologue. As he says, he intended to make one
Currently, but decided to keep it short “because the list of people who died wasn’t varied enough”. And it goes on and on: Martin Scorsese is too young to enjoy the amusement park rides, James Corden played a “fat cat”… you know how it is. Of course, the prankster ends with his lowest blow, urging whoever wins an award that night not to give a political speech because they know nothing about the real world and probably “spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg.”
As mentioned, Gervais is a serial thug who pulled off a similar offensive skit four years ago, but the Hollywood Foreign Press Association seems to have a masochistic streak on this one. It’s always good to have a good laugh at yourself, but given the way Gervais throws his hooks and punches – calling the HFPA obsolete, illiterate and racist in a few sentences – you wonder how thick the skin is. Or perhaps it points to how remarkably little the Globes care about public criticism of their practices, from voting to declaring The Tourist an accessible comedy.

That there is no contest between “giving in to 200 privileged egos in a room (and) entertaining a global audience of 200 million sitting at home and not winning any awards.” “I try to make it a spectator sport, I try to play the outsider,” he concludes. And the outsider would certainly add that he’d made the Golden Globes his personal Olympics — only instead of handing out medals, he was handing out verbal shit and lawsuits.
But we should not forget that Ricky is not much of an outsider: with an estimated net worth of $130 million, he probably even belongs to the higher echelons of his elite audience. The difference is that he can save himself. His roles as David Brent v
— a suicidal widower whom he compares to Jeffrey Epstein in that “of course he didn’t kill himself” — helped maintain his image as a sad clown or bitingly funny pariah who tolerated just enough to bring him back every few years. The fact that he’s British justifies his dark, dry humour, while adding enough distance between Hollywood’s slick slapstick and himself to make it all bearable.
The Golden Compass Movie: What Went Wrong?
There’s no question that Gervais shattered any preconceived notions of what is usually considered a successful comedy romp. Did he set fire to the room and hide the fire extinguisher? Absolute. Was he being hypocritical when he accused other celebrities of preaching water and drinking wine while making funny comments for a living? Guaranteed. He is aware of his hypocrisy, especially considering the number of celebrities
Actually trying to make a positive impact on the planet? Thanks to his own active involvement in many charitable causes, the answer is most likely yes, although Russell Crowe’s speech in absentia over Australia’s bushfires provided a strong counterpoint to Gervais’ anti-preaching. Did people still have fun? Actually yes, with a non-representative study on
And finally, is entertaining people by beating their idols while being one of them just another meta-layer of entertainment for the masses? This is a bit of a toss-up, with the cynic in me saying that Ricky found a way to play the game better than anyone else by ripping the contestants to shreds and making the audience feel good, while the optimist just is going to see some very solid satire stamped on the envelope. No matter what side you’re on, one thing’s for sure: the show has been a huge success for Gervais, putting him right back at the top as the most talked about actor in all of Hollywood right now.

The comedian can squeeze into a crowd, but is it all about his career? Sure, the laughter (cheap or not) is a big part of his act, but I’d argue that ultimately it’s also the humanity of his work that will be remembered. Most of all, he may have finally dispelled the idea that every honoree has to present a clean slate. Literally, his board has only three words, hastily scrawled in chalk: “I don’t care.” Or yes? The Golden Compass, a fantasy movie starring Nicole Kidman released in December 2007 drew fire from concerned Christians:
A new children’s film will be released in December called THE GOLDEN COMPASS. It was written by Phillip Pullman, a proud athlete who belongs to secular humanist societies. He hates The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis and wrote a trilogy to show the other side. The movie was watered down to trick kids and their parents into buying his trilogy where the kids end up killing God and everyone gets to do whatever they want. Starring Nicole Kidman
