Although many people are mentioned in this genealogy, the most famous is David. It is important that the first name Matthew gives to Jesus is “Son of David” (1:1). Another covenant between David and Jesus is that they are the only ones given titles. David is described as “king” (1:6) and Jesus is called “Messiah” – that is, “the anointed one” (1:16) – a title given to David when he was anointed at his inauguration. Scholars have also found a description of David in verse 17, where Matthew records the number of generations in the genealogical line from Abraham to Jesus:
[T]he ages from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David to the Babylonian captivity fourteen generations, and from the Babylonian captivity to Christ fourteen generations (Matthew 1:17).
Matthew divides the generations into three groups of fourteen. He draws our attention to the number fourteen, which is significant because David’s Hebrew name has fourteen. Let me explain. In the introduction to the genealogy, Jesus is identified as “the son of David.” The genealogical line then continues through the line of Abraham to “King David” (Matthew 1:6) and continues with the list of kings of Judah who descended from David (Matthew 1:7-10).
