Shield volcanoes are mainly thin lava formed in a central vent. Pyroclastic material is very rare in this volcano. Therefore, shield volcanoes grow from non-explosive eruptions of low-viscosity magma.
After the lava flows in all directions from the central pit or set of holes, it forms a wide flattened cone.
Because they form slowly by convection, this type of volcano can be hundreds of miles wide and up to 2,000 feet high. The safety net has a slope of 10 degrees to 5 degrees.
Some of these eruptions pour basaltic lava from long fissures instead of a central vent. They can flood the area around them with subsequent streams, eventually forming a plateau.
