The Rings Of Power’: What To Know Before You Watch Amazon’s New ‘lord Of The Rings’ Series
Since it was announced that the company had acquired the television rights to J.R.R. Tolkien’s trilogy. Tweets from the series’ official account haven’t shed much light — until now.
Two tweets posted on Thursday morning included an expanded map of Middle-earth, specifically the island of Númenor, the human civilization from which Aragon descended, which was destroyed thousands of years before the events of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. A link to a larger version of the map, along with the text “Welcome to the Second Age”, refers to the ages before the final union of Elves and Men and the first fall of Sauron.

Sauron Is Revealed In ‘the Rings Of Power’ Finale, And The Actor Didn’t Know It Was Him
For the average Lord of the Rings fan, the Peter Jackson films are set in the Third Age and shortly into the Fourth Age after the destruction of the One Ring.
By setting the series in the Second Age, Amazon has debunked the popular theory that it would focus on a young Aragon – the King of Gondor was born in the Third Age. However, it will appear to be focused on its race. The Second Age is also known as the “Age of Númenor” and is defined by two major events. First, the downfall of the kingdom for daring to challenge the Valar (the gods of Middle-earth). Second, the formation of a final alliance between the remaining Númenóreans, Elendil (Isildur’s father, who took the One Ring for himself) and the elf king Gil-galad.
While this is almost entirely new territory – The Last Alliance touched on it briefly during the Lord of the Rings movies – the show may feature cameos from some familiar faces (or at least names). Rivendell was founded in the Second Age under Elrond; the supreme prosperity of the dwarven city of Khazad-Doom (taken over by the Balrog in the Third Age and later known as Moria); and the forging of rings of power.
Lord Of The Rings: Don’t Read Tolkien’s Books Before The Rings Of Power
There are still plenty of white spots on the map that may yet be filled (at least if the series’ Twitter updates are any indication), including Harad and Khand, the men who fought for Sauron’s army, but some of the others on most -a little – turned to people from Tolkien’s mythology.
The series is slated for release on Amazon Video by 2021, but in the meantime Tolkien lovers are getting a steady stream of new information via tweets – more than enough time to reread if you’re looking for movies anywhere, and we are. brings you your favorite movies from your connected digital retailers together in one synchronized collection. Parents should be aware that the violence in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers includes arrows, spears, swords, monster pounding, deadly leaps and explosions, and countless casualties in battle. Of all the monsters, animal-loving children can be most upset when a hungry creature tears apart newly killed rabbits for food. There are nightmarish images of horrors dead and alive that can be overwhelming for some. The once heroic hero smokes. The story picks up where the previous Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring left off. Viewers unfamiliar with the first film (or JRR Tolkien’s novels) will be very confused. The show offers a more solid idea of what to expect (or what we know we won’t see).
The show also tweeted an image of a map of Middle-earth and the message “Welcome to the second age,” seemingly confirming that the show will take place long before the events.
