(1) They were true brothers of Jesus, i.e. half-brothers, children of Joseph and Mary (and younger than Jesus);
Jesus Chooses 12 Apostles
(2) they were his brothers, i.e., Joseph’s children from a previous marriage (and thus older than him, not being blood relatives);
(3) They were relatives of Jesus on the mother’s side, according to some, and according to others on Joseph’s side.
This is the most natural way of understanding the various references of these brethren who hold the first opinion; This is the clear meaning of Matthew 1:25 and Luke 2:7.
Those who take the family view affirm that the family does not allow brother to disobey or oppose brother as Jesus did (see Mark 3:31; John 7:3-4). They show that Jesus left his mother alone in the care of the apostle John (John 19:26-27).
