What Is The Hebrew Name For Jesus – “That is why, as I told you, it is necessary that Christ, because last night an angel told me that this was his name, come to the Jews”.

The Book of Mormon uses many names and titles for Jesus Christ. Susan Easton Black, a Latter-day Saint scholar, has listed more than 100 different Book of Mormon names for the Savior.1

Several Book of Mormon characters prefer certain names and titles to others. “Of these surnames,” wrote John and Gregory Welch, “many were used by a single author, while others were used almost universally” 2.

Each name-title highlights the different attributes of Christ. Thus, the names and titles preferred by each author often reflect how they are most closely associated with the Savior. John W. Welch explained, “Just from the names and titles they used when they spoke of the Lord, we see that every Book of Mormon prophet had a relationship with Jesus and testified of him in his own way,” giving us more than just speaking of the Lord, to the Lord, but also to reveal things about themselves”3

For example, Lehi used 17 different names for Christ4. According to Welch, “Lehi’s terminology is more diverse than that of any other Book of Mormon prophet.” Yet amid this diversity, Welch noted a concentration “around redemption as mediating functions.” 6 He points out how this helps us better understand Lehi himself:

These points take on additional meaning in the context of Lehi’s personal experiences. For Lehi, who has fled Jerusalem and the lands of his inheritance, the Messiah will be above all the Messiah and the Redeemer who will come to restore the fallen, the lost and the uprooted. He would return them to the lands of his inheritance.

Lehi’s son Jacob had a slightly different purpose. Jacob was ordained a priest by his brother Nephi (see 2 Nephi 5:26). Jacob’s concern with priesthood matters, such as holiness, can be seen in the fact that Jacob used the divine title “Holy One of Israel” more than any other Book of Mormon writer.

Furthermore, Welch noted that “Jacob’s priesthood functions are reflected in his testimony of Christ.” 8 For example, Jacob used the title “Christ” in 2 Nephi 10:3, where he explained, “because last night an angel told me that it must be his name” (2 Nephi 10:3).

(χριστός), which has the same meaning as Messiah, which comes from the Hebrew (משיח). In both languages, the words mean “anointed”. The title of Christ revealed to James by the angel seems at first sight to suggest that…

The name of the Messiah was revealed. As previous references to “Messiah” explain (see, for example, 1 Nephi 1:19; 10:4-5, 7, 9–11), the Nephites already knew that one of the Savior’s titles would be “anointed.” ” “

Jacob’s priesthood functions may explain why an angel revealed the name or title of “anointed” to him. The temple where Jacob’s speech was delivered was the place where the Lord chose his name (see Deuteronomy 12:11; 16:6). The priestly garment, according to the Book of Exodus, included “a plate of pure gold”, engraved with the words “HOLY LORD” and affixed to the High Priest’s forehead (see Exodus 28:36-38).

However, other sources say that the simple name of God was engraved on the headdress9, and during the Day of Atonement ritual the high priest revealed the name of God10.

Jacob knew many different names and titles for the Lord. Perhaps to protect the sacred nature of Yahweh’s (Jehovah’s) name, Jacob asked what name or title to reveal to the people and engrave on their heads. The term “anointed” was especially appropriate. As a consecrated priest, “Jacob personally identified with the fact that Jesus was anointed to fulfill his holy and eternal mission of reconciliation.”

While we cannot be sure what, if any, was new in the name of Christ, “the Anointed One,” that was revealed to James, the association with a priestly headdress fits into the larger context of James’ speech in 2 Nephi 6-10. Margaret Barker explained: “There are many suggestions in later tradition that the high priest did in fact represent Yahweh when he bore the Name, especially when he performed rituals of atonement.”

Accordingly, the atonement is at the forefront of James’ address, which Elder Jeffrey R. Holland called “one of the most definitive sermons on the Atonement recorded in all scripture.” 14 Since he was the first high priest of the Nephites and probably the first time he performed many necessary ordinances, exact details, such as God’s name or title, must be in Jacob’s mind.

Other similar considerations can be drawn from the individualized use of the name of Christ by each of the Book of Mormon authors.

Knowing the name of God is a great honor and spiritual privilege. Moses asked and was told by what name to know the Lord. King Benjamin gave his people the name of the Savior, whose knowledge distinguished them above all men. Hallowing God’s name is one of the Ten Commandments. Knowing the names and functions of God enables righteous people to ask for mercy, guidance, and salvation.

Jesus Christ has many titles, representing his many roles in our lives and the great eternal plan. Each relates to the Savior and the Atonement in their own unique and individual way. Often our relationship with Christ is shaped by our personal experiences and circumstances as we learn, grow, and mature. So it should come as no surprise that this applies to all Book of Mormon prophets.

There are many things that we learn by studying the different names of Christ used by individual prophets. He connects us with these prophets as real people who lived real lives, not ordinary, wooden figures. He reveals various personalities in the book and provides further evidence of multiple authorship of the record. He illustrates the logic and consistency in the use of 101 different names and titles used for Christ.

When the circumstances of the individual prophets are taken into account, and the names and titles chosen seem to fit naturally within the context of his testimony and teachings about Jesus Christ, it is hard to imagine that these prophetic expressions are inventions. This subtle consistency, even viewed as fiction, is a clear indication of a compositional sophistication far beyond Joseph Smith’s writing skills. Although they are considered the original writings of the actual individual prophets, this intimate knowledge of certain attributes of Christ is true, as evidenced by these people in the pages of this testament about Jesus Christ.

Book of Mormon Central: “Why did an angel reveal Christ’s name to Jacob? (2 Nephi 10:3)”36 (Feb. 18, 2016). This page is an introduction to the Hebrew alphabet. Hebrew is a Semitic language. The Semitic word comes from the name Shem, mentioned in Genesis (6:10) as the son of Noah, whose descendants lived in the Middle East. Phoenician, Hebrew, Aramaic, Syrian, and Arabic are examples of Semitic languages. They have similar features, such as the presence of guttural letters formed in the pharynx or larynx; a consonant system with three-letter word stems that indicate meaning; and altering the root form or morphology of a word by adding prefixes, infixes, and suffixes to determine the exact meaning and function of the word.

Hebrew was the original language of the Israelites. Unlike other ancient civilizations, the Hebrew Scriptures refer to only one God, the Lord God of Israel. Hebrew tradition, the Torah itself, as well as Jesus and the New Testament writers, called Moses the divinely inspired author of the Law, the Torah, or the Pentateuch, which consists of the first five books of the Hebrew Scriptures: Genesis, Exodus , Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy (see Genesis). Moses is believed to have lived in the second half of the second millennium BC, around 1450-1200 BC. Archeology has not yet revealed the exact time Moses lived and led his people during the exodus from Egypt, nor the actual script Moses used to write the Torah. In addition, there is no original manuscript by the author.
