See: Canon for discussion. The presentation of this theme in earlier or alternate versions is discussed in earlier versions of the legendarium section.
“Now Sauron’s lust and pride grew until he knew no bounds and resolved to become lord of all in Middle-earth and destroy the Elves, and if he could avoid Númenor’s doom, freedom, or any rivalry, he too. called himself the ruler of the land. A mask he could still wear to deceive people’s eyes if he chose to appear wise and righteous to them. But he wielded more power and fear, if he could; and those who saw his shadow spread over the world called him the lord of darkness and the enemy; and he gathered into his power all the evil things from the days of Morgoth that remained on the earth or under the earth, and the orcs were at his command and they multiplied like flies.’
What Is The Eye Called In Lord Of The Rings
Sauron (Quenya; IPA [ˈsaʊron] or [ˈθaʊron]), the eponymous Lord of the Rings, was the ultimate Mayan despot, creator of the One Ring, renowned disciple of the Vala Aulë, and Morgoth’s most trusted lieutenant. After Morgoth was driven out by the Valar, Sauron became the second Dark Lord and attempted to conquer Middle-earth through either guilty deception – usually rings of power – or by crushing the legions.

At the end of the Second Age, Sauron caused the fall of Númenor and was later defeated in Mordor in the war of the last alliance of Elves and Men, allied with Gil-galad and Elendil. In the final battle, Isildur was able to cut the ring from him, disintegrating his corporeal form and freeing him of his great power. After centuries of slumber, regaining his strength and awakening evil things, Sauron returned to power at the end of the Third Age, only to be defeated when Frodo Baggins destroyed the Ring on Mount Doom, and his spirit was claimed by the Void.
Sauron’s original name was Mairon. He was Vala Aulė’s most powerful smith Maia, who learned much from Aulė’s blacksmithing and embroidery techniques, becoming a great craftsman and “powerful in the teachings of Aulės”.
During this time Maironis was as Eru made him: good and uncorrupted. His greatest virtue was his love of order and perfection, and his abhorrence of all waste. However, this would also be the cause of his downfall, as Mairon saw in Melkor the will and strength that would help him achieve his personal goals faster than if he pursued them alone. But Melkor wanted to control or destroy Middle-earth itself, and Myron’s desire was to dominate the minds and wills of beings for what he saw as his own gain. In carrying out his wonderful plans, Maironis sought to increase his natural power, and that power eventually became an end in itself; so he was captured by Melkor, entered his entourage, and soon became his chief (egocentric) agent.

After his alliance with Morgoth, Mairon apparently remained loyal to the Valar, but secretly gave Morgoth information about his affairs. It was not until Morgoth established his strongholds in Middle-earth that Mairon left Valinor and openly declared his allegiance, becoming an avowed enemy of the Valar.
Before Melkor’s captivity, Sauron commanded the fortress of Angband and acted as his lieutenant. As a power struggle ensued, Angband was easily leveled by Valar forces, although it is unclear whether the demonic Maia was still around when the fortress was attacked. When Utumno was released and Melkor was taken prisoner, Sauron was nowhere to be found, and in their haste to capture the dark enemy and remove him from Middle-earth, the Valar paid little attention to the latter’s most feared servants.
, and the other Eldar called him Sauron, meaning “Abomination” or “Abomination” (a mockery of his original name).

The First Age In all the deeds of Melkor, in the Arda of Morgoth, in his mighty deeds and in his wiles, Sauron had a share, and was less wicked than his lord in that he long served another than himself. – Silmarillion, Valaquenta, “Of Enemies”
In the First Age, the Elves of the Ñoldor left the blessed kingdom of Valinor in the far west (despite the advice of the Valar) to wage war against Morgoth, who stole the Silmarils of Fëanor, enchanted the jewels that shone with the light of the present. Trees of Valinor destroyed. In that war, Sauron was considered “the greatest of [Morgoth’s] servants that bear a name” and was soon feared as a lord of ghosts and dire beasts, a shape-shifter, sorcerer, and cunning servant of his master.
When Morgoth left Angband much later to corrupt the newly awakened Atani (Men), Sauron led the war against the Elves.

He conquered the Elven island of Tol Sirion, so it became known as Tol-in-Gaurhoth, Isle of Werewolves.
He was the lord of the werewolves there, and Draugluin was the father of the werewolves. Sauron’s herald was the vampire Thuringwethil.
After Dagor Bragollach FA 456, Sauron’s hunters brought Gorlim and questioned him about the location of Barahir (Beren’s father). Gorlim refused to tell them anything, even under torture, until Sauron himself appeared and negotiated with the man. Gorlim asked for his wife Eilinel, who he believed had been captured. So Sauron agreed and Gorlim provided the information. However, Sauron revealed that Eilinel was dead and later killed Gorlim. During the quest for the Silmaril, Beren and King Finrod of Nargothron were captured by Sauron, who defeated Finrod in a duel with songs of power. He stripped them of their orc disguises and threw them into the dark pits where the werewolves devoured their friends. When the werewolf came to attack Beren, Finrod fought and killed him, but soon died of his wounds.

Soon after, Luthien the Hound and Huan arrived at the bridge of Tol-in-Gaurhoth. Sauron sent wolves to capture Luthien, but they were all killed by Huan. One of them was a Draugluin, but he escaped and told his master that Juan was there. So Sauron assumed the form of a werewolf and rushed to attack Lúthien, and Huan caught him and subdued him. He gave the tower to Luthien and escaped in the form of a “vampire”.
After his defeat by Lúthien, Sauron played little role in the events of the First Age (perhaps hiding from Morgoth’s scorn or anger). After his former master was defeated and taken in chains to Valinor, Sauron appeared repentant and begged for mercy from Eonwë and the victorious host of the West, although perhaps he was only frightened by his triumph. At the same time, Sauron did not want to return to the Far West to judge out of pride, and instead fled and hid somewhere in Middle-earth.
The forging of the single ring in the second century in the East casts a new shadow. There is no tyranny of bad men like my son; but Morgoth’s servant moves and evil things rise again. Every year it gets stronger because most men are mature for this purpose. – Gil-galad, Aldarion and Erendis: The Sailor’s Wife

After being hidden and inactive for five centuries, Sauron began to reveal himself again, and by 1000 SA he had amassed power and settled in the land of Mordor, east of Middle-earth, and began building the terrible Barad-dur near Mount Doom. . Soon vast armies of orcs, trolls, and other creatures of Morgoth’s time were formed; and Sauron corrupted the hearts of certain human nations, such as the Easterlings and the Haradrim, with delusions of power and wealth.
Although Sauron knew that humans were easier to influence, he sought to recruit the Elves into his service because they were far more powerful. About SA 1500 Sauron gained good eyesight and named himself Annatar, “lord of gifts”. He befriended the elven smiths of Eregion, including Celebrimbor (the greatest of the craftsmen, as he was descended from Feanor), and advised them in arts and magic. Not all the elves trusted him, especially Lady Galadriel, Elrond, and old King Gil-galad.
It is the master ring, the one ring that rules them all. It’s the only ring he lost a long time ago, greatly weakening his power. He wants you badly, but he doesn’t have to have you. -Gandalf, The Lord of the Rings, “Shadow of the Past”

To the elves who listened, Sauron gave knowledge and encouraged the creation of the rings of power as he secretly forged one ring to control the rings of the elves. On that ring Sauron wrote in Tengwar Black Speech Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatulûk, agh burzum-ishi krimpatul.
