What Area Code Is 415 In Canada – Areas in the numbering plan of California (blue) and border states. Prefixes 415 and 628 are shown in red.

The prefixes 415 and 628 are the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) telephone area codes for the city of San Francisco and its northern suburbs in Marin County (beyond the Gold Gate) and the northeastern corner of San Mateo County. The 415 prefix is one of the eighty-six original North American prefixes established in 1947, but later changed in geographic configuration. The 628 prefix was assigned in 2015 to form an overlap in the numbering plan area to alleviate central office prefix exhaustion.

In 1947, if AT&T installed the North American numbering plan for carrier charges, the state of California was divided into three numbering plan areas (NPAs) organized as geographic zones in the southern part, in the central part, and in the northern part of the state.

Area code 415 is assigned to central California, south of area code 916 and north of area code 213. It extends from Sacramento in the north to Bakersfield in the south.

In 1950, the boundaries of the numbering plan area were redrawn to create a division of the northern and central parts along a north-south dividing line. The area numbering of the 415 plan became the coastal region from the northern coast to the Oregon border, while the 916 was rearranged to form the northeastern corner of the state.

As part of this realignment, Sacramto was moved from prefix 415 to 916 and Bakersfield to 213.

During the run-up to Direct National Distance Dialing (DDD) in the early 1950s, the 318 area code was used temporarily in the San Francisco area, initially by customers in Glenwood, New Jersey, who participated in the first evidence of customers reaching the city, which as well as some areas north of the Golden Gate.

Area code 415 has been split three times due to rapid economic growth and demand for telecommunications services in the Bay Area:

On February 21, 2015, the numbering plan area was converted to an overlapping plan by adding the prefix 628 to the same service area for new numbers,

The area code 604 is one of the 86 original area codes assigned in 1947 to the 9th contiguous province of the United States and Canada. It served the troubled province of British Columbia. Until 1988, 604 also included Point Roberts, Washington, an American peninsula; Point Roberts was moved in 1988 to prefix 206 and is now served by prefix 360.

Despite the growth of British Columbia in the second half of the 20th century, 604 remained the province’s only area code for nearly 50 years. By the mid-1990s, however, the need for a new area code in the province was irresistible, due in large part to Canada’s numbering system. Each competitive local exchange operator in the country is allocated blocks of 10,000 numbers, corresponding to a three-digit prefix, for each rate to which it offers the service, such as the smallest village.

While smaller ctre rates usually do not need as many numbers, once a number is assigned to a carrier and ctre rate, it cannot be transferred elsewhere, for example to a higher ctre rate. In addition, some major cities are divided into several price categories that are never consolidated. This has resulted in thousands of numbers being wasted, and the growing popularity of mobile phones, pagers and fax machines has only exacerbated the problem. The number shortage is particularly acute in the Lower Mainland, which is home to most of the province’s landlines and most other telecommunications devices that require telephone numbers.

In 1997, 604 was reduced to the Lower Mainland, with a new prefix of 250 created for the rest of the province.

The partition in 1997 was seen as a long-term solution for the Lower Mainland. But within three years, the 604 was running out of business, again due to the aforementioned number assignment problem and the continued proliferation of cell phones and pagers. The number ran out relatively quickly in Vancouver and its immediate neighbors due to their rapid growth, but the number assignment problem remains severe in the Lower Mainland as a whole.

On November 3, 2001, the 778 prefix was implemented as a combined overlay for the Lower Mainland’s two largest regional districts, Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley Regional District. The experiment was announced in NANP Planning Letter PL-246. The rest of the Lower Mainland continued to use only 604, but the addition of the 778 prefix necessitated the implementation of the T dial throughout the region.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announced on June 7, 2007 that 778 would become a regional tire cover on July 4, 2007, following the same number assignment issue that saw 604 out of 250 near exhaustion.

As of June 23, 2008, T dialing became mandatory in British Columbia and an attempt to make a seven-digit call triggered an interception message reminding of the new rule. After September 12, 2008, seven-digit dialing no longer works.

Overlays have become the preferred form of housing in Canada, as they offer a simple solution to the number assignment problem.

The local exchange operator responsible for 604 and 778 is Telus. Through “number portability” and the sub-assignment of all numbers in several post offices to a competitor, many numbers in the 778 prefix are now served by Shaw Cablesystems.

Contrary to what most Americans might think, prefixes exist outside of the United States. There are 405 area codes in the world: 326 in the US, 42 in Canada, 17 non-geographic and 20 more. Most other area codes are in the Caribbean. However, some are found in the Pacific, including 684 (American Samoa), 671 (Guam) and 670 (Northern Mariana Islands).

California is the state with the most area codes at 34, followed by Texas (27), New York (19), Florida (17) and Illinois (13). 12 states in the US have only one area code. While no US area codes cross state lines, 3 Canadian area codes cross provincial lines.

In the United States and its territories, Canada and the Caribbean, the organization and allocation of telephone numbers is managed by the North American Numbering Plan Administration (NANPA). NANPA regulates the assignment of telephone prefixes and prefixes to various telephone companies. The basic format for a phone number in one of these countries is NPA-NXX-XXXX or (NPA) NXX-XXXX.

Postcode: Prefix used in the early 1940s. The zip codes were developed by AT&T and the Bell System to divide the coverage area into “numbering plan areas” (NPA for short). Postcodes are usually referred to as prefixes. Although the system was developed in the 1940s, long-distance direct selection did not begin until the early 1950s. Some prefixes are reserved for special purposes. For example,
