Pokemon History

Reporting from the BBC, Pokemon was created by a man from Japan named Satoshi Tajiri and his friend Ken Sugimori who is an illustrator.

In 1982, Satosi started a gaming magazine called Game Freak with his friends.

However, after that, he decided to no longer write about games and started making his own video games.

Then, in 1989 Satoshi turned Game Freak into a game company. Together with their friends, they released several games that were quite successful in the market, such as Pulseman, Yoshi & Mario Wario.

In the early 1990s, Satoshi was inspired by his childhood when exploring the forest and finding insects and tadpoles.

Through these memories, Satoshi got the idea for the game Pocket Monsters (Pokemon) and submitted it to Nintendo.

First release

At first Nintendo was not convinced by the Pocket Monsters game project, but in the end Nintendo accepted the game.

Satoshi spent six years working with legendary game maker Shigeru Miyamoto (Mario and The Legend of Zelda) to make Pocket Monsters a reality.

On February 27, 1996, Pocket Monster was finally released as a Red and Green version for the Gameboy console in Japan.

The game sold millions of copies and Nintendo released it to the US in 1998 and the UK a year later as a Red and Blue version.

Pokemon Cards

After the success of the first game, the Media Factory company then created the Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG).

The card set containing 102 Pokemon cards was first released on October 20, 1996, with drawings by Ken Sugimori, Mitsuhiro Arita and Keiki Kinebuchi.

After that, Pokemon cards became very popular. Three years later in 1999 the card was introduced to North America and soon the rest of the world.

Pokemon cards can be used to play with other players. So, Pokemon card tournaments have sprung up, and now there’s even a world championship tournament.

Since it was first released, until now more than 30 billion cards have been printed.

Some people can even pay up to hundreds of thousands of pounds for some rare Pokemon cards.

Pokemon TV series and movies

In 1997 Pokemon entered the market not only as a game but also into an animated TV series in Japan.

Tells the story of a boy named Satoshi who begins his adventure to become a Pokemon master.

Satoshi has a Pokemon partner named Pikachu, whose character Pikachu will later become an icon of the animated series.

when the animated series was released worldwide, the producers changed Satoshi’s name to Ash Ketchum.

This animated TV series has released 23 Pokemon series with over 1000 episodes.

Not only TV series, a feature film has also been produced and screened in cinemas in Japan.

The film is titled Pocket Monsters the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back. Tells the story of Ash Ketchum and his friends when they meet the powerful Pokemon Mewtwo.

After that, there have been 23 animated films that have been made and a live action film.

Pokemon Legend Arceus

According to Mirror, Pokemon is one of Nintendo’s most popular franchises since it debuted in 1996.

Game Freak as a pokemon developer finally broke away from the tradition of the Pokemon game formula in the previous series and launched their latest series entitled Pokemon Legends: Arceus.

Although it has a different concept, it still has the same game loop, where players will take on the role of a trainer who is assigned to catch all Pokemon as well as become the strongest trainer.

However, the plot in Pokémon Legends: Arceus is much more creative and delivers something from the previous game series.

Quoted from Nintendo’s official website, Pokemon Legend: Arceus has been accessible since January 28, 2022. The game can be played on the Nintendo Switch console.
