Superman/Shazam!: Black Man Returns is a short animated superhero adventure filled with moments of non-stop action and danger, but also positive messages that parents should be aware of. When the evil Black Man (Arnold Vosloo) decides to kill the young orphan Billy Batson (Zach Callison), Billy transforms himself into a superhero – Captain Marvel (Jerry O’Connell). Along with Superman (George Newbern), the two face off against Black Man, resulting in some intense fight scenes. There are close-ups of characters being thrown off walls, buildings being destroyed, hands being placed around throats and punches being punched in the face. Although there is great danger and menace, no one is killed or seriously injured – although Superman is temporarily unconscious. The bully punches Billy and leaves a scar on his cheek. Superman shoots laser beams from his eyes while Black Man shoots bolts from his hands. Billy is kind and compassionate, always willing to help others, even if he doesn’t have much. This includes advocacy for black men experiencing homelessness. When this character is later a guardian angel, this probably plays into the problematic “negro magic” narrative. The language rarely says “ass” and “oh god” once or twice.
