Superman Shazam The Return Of Black Adam Blu Ray – Review: Superman / Shazam! Black Man Returns Blu-ray Last Updated by Tony ‘Jiman’ Guerrero on November 9, 2010 7:00 am

Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Home Video have a new release in stores today. This goes beyond the usual DC Animated Universe Original PG-13 movies. This is part of the DC Showcase that highlights the animated shorts while focusing on the less mainstream characters that comic book fans love. Here’s an unseen Superman/Shazam! Back to the black man (running time is 24:32).

The Black Man makes a dramatic entrance looking angry. Billy looks a little older than I’d like, but there’s a great portrayal of his powerlessness and the fact that he’s just a kid. Billy meets Clark in the story when Black Adam seeks him out and recognizes the power in him. Soon there will be an epic battle with lots of destruction. Justice League’s George Newbern reprises his role as Superman, Jerry O’Connell is Captain Marvel, Arnold Waslow is Black Adam and James Garner is the Wizard.

The animation is smooth and crisp. The colors are vibrant without being too colorful. There is something about seeing it on Blu-ray. The story is a great introduction to Captain Marvel and Shazam. There are some sweet effects during the battle. One of the complaints is that there were not many people in the city during the battle. It felt like the whole place instantly cleared the moment the black man arrived. The funny thing is that when I realized this, some cars were shown to the unsuspecting as a distraction from the battle. I have to wonder how many people will get this release since the other “shorts” have already been released.

As for the other shorts, they are the “extended” version. For example, The Specter had a running time of 11:51 in the Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths release and runs 12:52 here. Green Arrow has a running time of 12:13 and Jonah Hex 13:03. Although I watched Green Arrow not too long ago, I can hardly remember what was different. It looks like there were more fight scenes.

Special features include commentaries on all four shorts. Bruce Timm’s picks (four episodes; one from Batman: The Animated Series, one from Batman: The Brave and Bold and two from Justice League Unlimited). There is also a trailer for Batman: The Brave and the Bold.

I dug Superman/Shazam! feature but I have already seen and own the other three shorts. Although they are slightly elongated, it is hard to argue whether this small difference is enough to justify a new purchase. If you skipped or missed one of the recent releases, this might make a more compelling argument for you to buy it. I would definitely not suggest paying full retail price (buy it on sale or online). It would be great if it was successful and we see more releases with darker characters. I understand the reasoning behind this packaging but I would prefer newer content. The Blu-ray is a nice presentation and all the shorts are top notch, so I give it a 3.5 out of 5. The world’s two mightiest heroes team up to fight a 5,000-year-old evil that is determined to take over the world. DC Comics fans will enjoy heart-pounding action as Superman and Captain Marvel battle the equally powerful and evil Black Adam in the new short film Superman/Shazam: The Return of Black Adam.

The 20-minute film reveals the origin of Captain Marvel. The superhero was once a teenager Billy Batson. His life changes forever when Shazam, the wizard, gives him the power to become the world’s greatest hero.

Jerry O’Connell (Sliders and Crossing Jordan), who brought Captain Marvel’s voice to life, also voiced Earth’s greatest mortal in an episode of Justice League Unlimited.

George Newbern reprises his role from the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited TV series as the voice of Superman/Clark Kent, while Zach Callison voices Billy Batson, with James Garner as the wizard Shazam and Arnold Waslow (The Mummy) as Black Adam.
