Respawn’s Secret Apex Legends fell out of nowhere and then took the battle royale genre by storm. It proved to be the perfect recipe for addictive gameplay, AAA production quality, and a free-to-play business model that managed to temporarily dethrone Fortnite and PUBG as the most popular and most viewed multiplayer games.
The numbers have definitely come down since the game recorded a record 2 million concurrent player count in its first month, but despite the occasional bump in the road, its community remains quite large. It’s safe to say that Apex paved the way for the genre and secured a place for it for the foreseeable future.
So far, Apex Legends has peaked at 411,183 on Steam alone in 2022. With the addition of the number of consoles, we wouldn’t be surprised if the total reaches a million in one day.
The game that sparked the craze that changed the entire multiplayer gaming landscape over the past few years, PUBG still attracts a huge audience even as the battle royale genre is flooded with copycat games.
The 50 Best Video Games Of All Time

But even though PUBG will no longer rule the home of the battle royale, it still offers a tactical military simulation experience unlike any other game in the genre. That, and the fact that its mobile version is also very popular (numbers not included in the stats above), should see a soldier of the PUBG community throughout 2021.
The peak number of concurrent players in PUBG in 2022 increased significantly compared to last year and reached 696,704. In 2021, there were only 458,778 people.
Another game that sees a growing number of concurrent players every year is Dota 2. Its growth actually seems to contradict the popular belief that the multiplayer online battle arena genre is dying out. Sure, MOBA games aren’t experiencing the growth they’re used to, but don’t think for a second that they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
