The sequence of a speech or presentation can make or break the way your audience receives your content. Sometimes a show can go really well when you order your points 1-2-3-4-5, but it can crash when you order it 5-2-4-1-3. and can burn. Andrew learned that the sooner viewers got to know him and his background, the more they would be able to understand his jokes and laugh later in the series.
A Simple Reason Why Andy Stanley Is Being So Misunderstood
Another note that Andrew makes is that when you write a joke, the punchline should come at the end. Mixing it up will confuse your audience and make them laugh. It doesn’t help you or your audience move forward.
It is very common for communicators to lose their position while giving a presentation. When it comes to precepts, we can often go on tangent or go back to some other point. But when it comes to comedy, the stakes are a bit high. Comedians might go in with a slip and say, “You know what, I completely forgot what I was about to say. Let me back down.” Accept that this humanizes the situation and gives credibility to the audience – but you don’t want your son to make the same mistake twice.
Andrew finds that when he has a panic attack and forgets where to go, it’s not always as noticeable to the audience as he feels at the moment. Surprisingly, it’s easy to play through breaks as a regular part of the set. The way he is laughing at a past joke, taking a breath, or even starting to engage with the audience.
One thing Andrew noticed is that successful comedians find a way to engage their audiences, even if they haven’t seen them live for a while. Whether it’s a podcast or an Insta story, it’s important to give fans a chance to watch and listen online on a regular basis.

The first and most important lesson I learned from the seminar was the importance of context. Context is key. Without proper context, you can come to dangerous conclusions. I remember the old preacher’s story about a young man who wanted to know the will of God, so he randomly opened his Bible and put his finger on the first verse he saw: “
(Matthew 27:5). Clearly not satisfied with this, the young man studied the Bible again and came across this verse: “
The same can be said in the sermons. If you take the same famous speech in a different context, you get a very different meaning. How differently would we interpret Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech if he had given it at a psychic convention? How differently would we interpret Lou Gehrig’s famous speech “I consider myself the most unlucky man in the world” if he delivered it to a group of hungry children in Somalia? Again, context is important.
