There is a really interesting (and perhaps frustrating?) answer to this question. And we don’t really know the answer. We can speculate, but there is no firm, consistent, 100% answer.

Why is this? Well, firstly, there’s no way to individually count the number of stars in our Milky Way – that’s where the guesswork comes in. To calculate, we need to calculate the mass of our galaxy and then the percentage. This mass consists of stars.

### Counting Stars With The Cows

Next we need to determine the mass of the average star so we can calculate the number of stars in the galaxy. This is also not insignificant – you can say that our Sun is an average-sized star, which gives an estimate of the number of stars in the galaxy. But our Sun may not be truly typical – there are plenty of low-mass stars out there. Using a low-mass red dwarf as an intermediate-mass star gives a completely different answer to the total number of stars in our galaxy.
