One of the best habits I have developed in my life is to exercise every day; I have been doing it for over three years now. It was just like brushing my teeth!

But how long does it take for that new action to become embedded in our habits, to become a habit? Are you in a hurry to give up on trying to maintain your period because it doesn’t seem fast enough?

In fact, you need to set realistic expectations, it can take anywhere from a few weeks to almost a year to become a new character.
You may have heard that it takes 21 days to form a habit. The theory began in the 1950s with a surgeon named John Maxwell. He found that when he performed the surgery – plastic surgery and amputation – it took patients up to three weeks to adjust to the changes in their bodies.
He wrote about it, and his observations became viral and viral in the 1950s. It was like a rumor game, and the result was the idea that it took 21 days to make.
What John Maxwell actually said was a little different, he said it would take at least 21 days.

I point this out because you may be basing your habits success or failure on the 21 day ‘ruling’ and get frustrated if you don’t form your new habit within that time. In fact, asking how long it takes to perform a ritual is like asking how long a string is. It can be any time, any length.
The time it takes to form a habit varies from person to person as it depends on the habit and the steps you take to create it.
Are you doing everything right to form a habit? How committed are you to this habit? How focused are you? How much do you want?
Your menstrual cycle depends on all of these variables. That is why there is no magic number of days in which you will form a strong habit.

To try and give you some reference times – like I said, I’ll tell you how long it will take! – let’s look at a study by the European Journal of Social Psychology. The study was conducted by Phillippa Lally and found that among the group of participants, some took as little as 18 days while others took up to 254 days to form a new habit.
That is a very big difference and it depends on all the things I mentioned earlier. You can’t be disappointed if your period doesn’t form as quickly as you’d like, you just have to find out what works for you.
When I did exercise daily – I’ve been doing it for over two years now – it came from following a routine.
My original goal was to exercise every day for 30 days. After 30 days, I thought “I can do this, I can do it for a long time.”

But to become a real habit, something as straightforward as brushing your teeth, can take up to 6 months.
I just do it, follow the process to create a habit, to make sure that the behavior happens every day. Now, I can’t miss it. It’s really like brushing my teeth, I can’t sleep before I exercise.
The reason I don’t know exactly when exercise becomes a habit is because I don’t always focus on the end goal. I don’t tell myself that I will exercise every day for 365 days. Instead, I focused on getting through my life, one day at a time.
I encourage you to do the same with any habit you are trying to create, taking it one day at a time rather than expecting it to be planned for a specific day.
