His Dark Materials Season 2 Episode 1 – Nearly a year after its climactic Season 1 finale, the second season of HIS DARK MATERIALS premiered Monday on HBO. Based on the book series by Philip Pullman, the show follows Lyra (Logan’s Daphne Keen), a 13-year-old girl with magical abilities who lives in a multi-world reality. In the timeline first introduced to viewers in season one, the factor that separates their world from ours is that all humans have a companion called Satan, a human spirit that takes the form of an animal. Humans cannot physically live without their demons and must always maintain a certain distance from each other. Lyra is an orphan living with scholars at Jordan College, Oxford, where we see her abandoned as a baby by her polar explorer, Lord Isreal (James) McAvoy. She and her best friend Roger (Leon Lloyd), an orphan, live a relatively happy life in college, and their world is shattered when other college kids are discovered missing. Discovering her special abilities through the use of a rare device called the Analythetometer, Lyra leads the way in finding the missing children and uncovering the secret operation behind them. On this journey to war, she meets an airman named Leescorsby (Lin-Manuel Miranda) and enlists his help in taking down the Magistrate.

He kidnaps Roger, only to be a moment too late to save Lyra so her father successfully separates Roger from his demon and both of them successfully use their powers in a new world. Lord Asriel reunites with Meris and asks her to join him so they can become an irresistible force in their mutual quest for dust. She declines, falsely saying she wants to stay behind Lyra, and Lord Asriel walks through his new portal as Lyra surreptitiously spies nearby. Lyra visits Roger’s corpse and mourns her friend’s death, assuring him that his death will not be in vain, and walks through the portal with her demon to follow her father and his predecessor. Joe stopped him before it was too late. The season ends with Will (Amir Wilson), another kid introduced a few episodes ago and living in an alternate reality, finding another opening to the portal and passing through after mysteriously touching it.

This series of events picks up where we leave off as the second season begins. Lyra is in a new world – lost, alone, missing Roger. At first, her ghost is her only companion until she enters a nearby town and meets children who look her own age. These children have no ghosts, and Lyra wonders how they can live without them. The children are more aggressive and violent than the children in Lyra’s world, until she meets and befriends Will, a boy who passed through the other portal opening, and she realizes she meets someone she can trust to help her. There are no adults in this new world, and as she talks to Will, Lyra learns that he is also from Oxford – but not like her.
Meanwhile, Marisa continues to work with the Magistrate – the evil organization she trusts – to find Lyra and stop her from her and Lord Asriel’s plans. They capture a witch who interrogates Marissa and tells Dutch about a baby prophecy. After discovering that the child of the prophecy is Lyra, the witch is promptly killed by Marissa, who grows even more vicious.

Meanwhile, Lee – who is responsible for Lyra and Roger’s well-being – is unaware of the details of the events and meets with a group of witches to prepare for war against the Magistrate and find Lyra. Lee is given a mission to find Stanislaus Grumman (Fleabag’s Andrew Scott), an explorer who is believed to be dead but has a connection to their world.
The episode ends as Will, after reading his (murdered) dead father’s letters, sees a knife – which means he also has magical abilities – and starts walking towards the Angel Tower in the heart of the city. It seems so. According to what he saw in his dream. As they walk, the Specters (the evil creatures that have attacked and killed all the adults in town) start following him because he is older than most of the kids and therefore prone to capture.
Overall, the episode moved very slowly and didn’t show any major events. Like Season 1, the show seems to move slowly to establish the story and its essential context. The pairing of Will and Lyra makes for an interesting front as both young actors are on and off screen, and their introduction to this new world where kids run things creates a lot of potential. With Lee’s appointment, the beloved Andrew Scott is expected to finally make his long-awaited appearance on the show and add more energy to this fantasy drama.

However, as a fan of the books, I admit to being a little emotional at the amount of care the cast and crew put into every little detail to stay true to Philip Pullman’s books while creating a masterpiece on the small screen.
