HBO apparently doesn’t want to just ignore the Game of Thrones IP after 8 seasons. The House of the Dragon prequel hasn’t officially aired yet, but they’ve announced plans for a new project. HBO is developing a sequel centered on the character Jon Snow.
The Hollywood Reporter provides an exclusive announcement from HBO as seen Friday (17/6/2022). Called a sequel, the story will be a direct continuation of the end of season 8 of Game of Thrones which received a lot of criticism from the audience.
The details of the story have not been revealed yet. The title of the series has not yet been announced. To be sure, Jon Snow’s adventure will not just end in season 8 episode 6 of The Iron Throne. Kit Harrington is rumored to be returning to play Jon Snow in the series.
HBO has not yet announced when the series will air and how many episodes they will produce. Fans seem to still have to wait a little longer or focus on waiting for the release of Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon which is scheduled for August 21, 2022.
The latest series adapted from George RR Martin’s novel will be led by Miguel Sapochnik as co-showrunner. The name Miguel Sapochnik is certainly no stranger to Game of Thrones fans, because he is the figure behind the successful episode of Battle of the Bastards (2016).
For House of the Dragon, Miguel Sapochnik collaborated with Ryan J. Condal on the showrunner bench. Their history of success in television series makes this Game of Thrones spin-off even more eagerly awaited, especially what Miguel Sapochnik did through episodes of Battle of the Bastards and Hardhome.
Previously, it was also reported that HBO will be making many prequels (and possibly sequels) to Game of Thrones. The previously canceled one was played by Naomi Watts. The series had already shot one episode before HBO finally decided to disband the project.
The canceled prequel tells the story of the beginning of Westeros even before the story in Game of Thrones happened. The setting is 5,000 years before the battle for the throne between Daenerys Targaryen and Cersei Lannister. It is planned that the prequel will explore characters such as Bran the Builder.
HBO is said to have poured US $ 30 million for shooting the first episode. The shooting process which took place in the northern part of Ireland was tinged with various rumors and problems.
