This new book was actually republished by Gallimard on June 11, 2015 in French (the original language of the publication). However, if you’re like me and your French isn’t right, then you’ll have to wait a year after the first volume’s release to see the next installment of the saga. When we last saw Lyra, she was traveling to the North Pole with gypsies to rescue lost children who had been kidnapped by priests. In the previous volume, we met several characters, including Lord Asriel, Mrs. Coulter, a scientist at Jordan College, and Gypsy. In this volume, we finally get to meet Iorek Byrnison and the witch from Lapland.

As I said in my review of the first volume, the improvised, almost childish ink and watercolors really bring the story to life. I especially love the scenes with Lyra and Iorek Byrnison. When Lyra first encounters Iorek in the arctic port town up north, you can almost smell the alcohol, blood, and dirty bears from the way the scene is drawn and colored.

I still think the manga can be a bit confusing if you’ve never read the original. Fortunately, there is a single-page plot introduction and pictures of the main characters at the beginning of this volume. Overall, the process seems to be more intensive than the first volume. Transitions are less abrupt, and panel groups in the same scene have the same background color, which helps distinguish one scene from another.

For example, when Farder Coram tells Lyra how he met Serafina Pekkala when he was young, the background color changes from dark blue at the moment to yellow in the flashback. This transitional color scheme is of course present in the first volume, but the tighter text also helps to make the transition clearer in the second volume. Less about explaining the world and how it works, more about showing Lyra’s adventures.

The story ends about two-thirds of the way through the novel, which is not surprising considering that a third volume in English is due out next year. True, at first I thought it had an equally good ending, but a dismal US box office, 2007 adaptation of the Chris Weitz film, but then I remembered that Lyra didn’t ask Iorek to take back the throne from Iofur Raknison. In the end, I liked this volume more than the last one. It’s still a bit frustrating, but, I’ll have to wait another year to come to a conclusion. Also, as I said in my first review, if you’ve never read the original novel, I highly recommend it. The manga is as usual, for hardcore fans like me or people who already know the story. The books are pretty thin, and considering they sell for about $10 each, if you’re not particularly interested in Philip Pullman’s books, you might want to wait for the full releases of all three, assuming one of them ever gets released .
