It all started a few days ago, 93 million miles above the Sun. A coronal mass ejection (CME) is the largest magnetized plasma ejected from the Sun’s outer layer, the corona. The auroras are formed when high-energy particles of sunlight collide with the Earth’s atmosphere. These particles activate gases in the sky and cause them to glow, just like neon lights do. Auroras are one of the few ways to observe weather in space, and while they are usually confined to the poles, enough stimulation from the Sun can cause auroras more distantly.
But before the SME gets here tomorrow, the high-speed coronal hole stream is expected to arrive tonight and trigger a G1 or “small” geomagnetic storm. A coronal hole is a colder region in the Sun’s corona that creates high-speed solar flares filled with charged particles that can spread them throughout the Solar System. High-speed streams of coronal holes can create auroras on Earth.
