Can We See The Northern Lights Tonight – If you live in the northern United States, keep an eye on the skies again Thursday night: The aurora borealis, or northern lights, may make a rare appearance for the second night in a row.
According to AccuWeather, recent eruptions on the sun’s surface have sent clouds of charged particles known as coronal mass ejections.

“These cinder clouds are expected to collide with Earth’s magnetic field Wednesday night into Thursday, causing a dazzling aurora borealis,” said AccuWeather’s Brian Lada.
Will Central Virginia See The Northern Lights Tonight?
While the best views of the northern lights are likely on Wednesday night, more are possible on Thursday night. But the light from the Aurora Borealis likely won’t be seen as far south Wednesday night, AccuWeather said.
Geomagnetic storms like these can also affect infrastructure around and on Earth, disrupting communications, power grids, navigation, and radio and satellite services, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said.
NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a G3 (strong) geomagnetic storm watch for Thursday. This is the third level of NOAA’s five-level geomagnetic storm. (G1 hurricanes are smaller; G5 hurricanes are considered severe.)
Keep An Eye Out For A Chance Of Northern Lights Tonight
Storms can move the aurora borealis southward from its usual location over the polar region. The northern lights from this storm could be visible if weather conditions are favorable in southern Pennsylvania from Iowa to Oregon, NOAA reported.
Earthsky.org said cities like Minneapolis and Milwaukee saw the aurora overhead, while cities like Lincoln, Nebraska, Indianapolis and Annapolis, Maryland saw it on the northern horizon.
The southern lights, known as the Northern Lights, can be seen as far south as Australia.

The Aurora Borealis is an astronomical phenomenon that occurs when a large geomagnetic storm interacts with charged particles in the upper layers of the Earth’s atmosphere.
These are usually only found north of the US-Canada border. Mostly near the North Pole.
Solar flares have intensified this week, meaning the Northern Lights could be visible far to the south after dark tonight.

The big question is whether Central Virginians will be able to watch the dancing northern lights.
People living in central Virginia will not be able to see the northern lights during the strongest geomagnetic storm of 2020.
Even if the weather conditions are perfect, the energy is not strong enough to make the lights visible in Central Virginia. The graphic above shows that the Northern Lights can be seen on the horizon where the line crosses northern Virginia. Lush green areas, including parts of Montana stretching north into Maine, with lights visible overhead.
How To See The Northern Lights Over Wisconsin Tonight
If you head north, away from the city lights, you can see the northern lights, and the higher you go, the better your chances.
For the northern lights to be visible in Central Virginia, the kp index must be between 7 and 9. Unfortunately, Central Virginia is not on this list. You won’t find it anywhere south of the DC area.

NOAA’s space weather forecast attempts to predict the Kp index during a geomagnetic storm. The Kp index is a number that shows how much solar energy disturbs the Earth’s magnetic field. A higher Kp index means a larger aurora borealis and the aurora borealis can be seen further south.
How To See The Northern Lights Near Seattle
The NOAA image below shows how far south the Northern Lights can be seen at different levels of the Kp index. According to tonight’s forecast on the Kp index, the Kp index is expected to be seven.
Kp-index=7 line enters southern Michigan. In very dark areas, the Northern Lights can be seen across Michigan tonight. It should be very clear so that the sky does not block the view. The only question is whether the Northern Lights will actually develop.
The yellow line on the map above is the southern visibility of the northern lights when the Kp index is seven.
Parts Of Region Could See Northern Lights Wednesday Night
Obviously, you won’t be able to see the northern lights in any of these illuminated cities. You have to get away from the cities a bit and it’s very dark in the north.
If you want a good chance of seeing the northern lights, it’s always best to drive as far north as possible. There’s a chance in the south tonight, so you’ll have to head to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

The aurora borealis is seen after a strong geomagnetic storm in the United States. A solar storm of this magnitude can also cause GPS and satellite interference
Rain and storms will move through our area late Wednesday night into Thursday morning, but north of here there’s a chance to see dancing green lights in the sky.
Lucky 7 Tips For Aurora Viewing In Fairbanks
A strong geomagnetic storm (G3) occurs in response to a solar flare. The strength of the storm and the height of the atmosphere where it occurs determines which colors appear.
Our chances of seeing the Aurora are slim, but if you head a bit north, it’s possible to see it low on the horizon Thursday morning.
Meteorologist Chris Michaels is an American Meteorological Society (AMS) certified broadcaster who forecasts weather conditions in Southwest Virginia 10. News from 5:00 to 7:00 weekdays on Virginia Today. A coronal mass ejection, or CME, is a large burst of solar plasma from the Sun’s surface that can sometimes reach Earth’s atmosphere and magnetic field. When particles from a CME interact with molecules in Earth’s upper atmosphere, their collisions can cause molecules in Earth’s atmosphere to release energy in the form of light. It creates phenomena such as the Aurora Borealis. If these CMEs are strong enough, Auroras can extend as far south as the Southern Plains.
Northern Lights Might Be Seen Across Large Parts Of The U.s. This Weekend
Several CMEs were spotted heading towards Earth a few days ago and are expected to reach us this evening. The high concentration of energetic particles causes the aurora event to extend into the southern United States, visible in many northern states. However, the longest reach of the aurora can be seen on the horizon in northern Oklahoma and OKC. While we here in southwest Oklahoma may be just outside of this range, places north of I-40 may be lucky enough to experience a weather phenomenon that is usually only seen in Canada and Alaska.
When the CME was spotted a few days ago, the SWPC, or Spacecraft Prediction Center, issued a G3 watch for Earth, meaning Earth can expect a powerful geomagnetic storm to hit. These CME particles also interact with the Earth’s magnetosphere, or magnetic field, and can cause disturbances in electronics. They mostly cause frequency interference in radios and satellites such as GPS, but when strong enough they can cause power outages in an entire area. The recent CME appears to be causing a strong radio blackout, particularly in the Earth’s western hemisphere. CMEs are also measured by the planetary K-index, which measures the size of the geomagnetic storm and is used to provide an evening Aurora forecast. The K-index is rated on a scale of 0-9, with a high of 7 today/tomorrow.
Tonight’s forecast looks to clear in the hours after sunset, but clouds will gather over Texoma after midnight. Early tomorrow morning the sky will be overcast to block the view of tonight’s Aurora, which is near the horizon here in Oklahoma. The best chance to try to see this phenomenon is an hour after sunset before the clouds increase for the night.
