Brightest Object In The Night Sky Tonight – At night there are many stars in the sky, but who shines? Find out what the brightest star in the sky is tonight and how to find it.
What is the brightest star in the night sky? You are right, it is Sirius (mag -1.45), and during the winter months it will be low on the southern coast for most of us in the northern hemisphere.
Brightest Object In The Night Sky Tonight
Sirius is so bright that it is often mistaken for Jupiter (magnitude -2.7) or Venus (magnitude -5).

However, if we change the question to “What is the brightest star in the sky tonight?”
Stars of magnitude 1 or 0 are the brightest at night. The magnitude of the sun is about -27. The full moon is -13.
, which is the size of an object as seen from 10 parsecs (32.6 light-years: 1 parsec is 3.26 light-years – read our guide to measuring distances in space for more information).

Since Sirius can be seen in the night sky for several months, other stars must be very bright during this time. It turns a seemingly simple problem into a fun party trick.
During the year, only three stars are responsible for the brightest sky. But what is it and how do we get it?
Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky during autumn, winter and early spring. To find Sirius, you have to follow Orion’s Belt Star line to the lower, southeast—usually right on the horizon—and there it is.

In late February, the second-brightest star in the northern hemisphere dips into the night. Arcturus (magnitude -0.1) is the fourth brightest star in the night sky: a red giant about 35 light-years away.
To find it, just follow the curve of the plow handle away from the blade (while you’re there, you might want to look for the stars of Merak and Mizor and Alcor).

Arcturus is the next bright star we want to see. This is one of my favorite stars and it makes me smile every time I see it.
Sirius was still in the sky when Arcturus appeared, however. It wasn’t until early April, when Sirius disappeared, that Arcturus took its place as the brightest star of the night.
Next is bright blue Vega (mag 0), which returns to the sky in early spring. Vega, in the constellation Lyra the Harp, is the brightest star in the Summer Triangle, one of our favorite summer constellations.
Venus And The Moon Will Shine Bright In The Night Sky Tonight
Vega rises in the sky as Sirius rises and rises above the spring and early summer side.
By September, when the hour of Arcturus ends, Vega is near the west, in the upper part of the sky.
The stars of the Summer Triangle are visible in the night sky in early January, if you can believe it. This is where something interesting happens.

In December, when Vega slowly returned, Sirius joined, and the two appeared in the sky at the same time. The problem is, they are all so close to the horizon that they are hard to see.
So where does this leave us? It is true that the brightest stars in December are Vega until night, so Sirius, but what if they are too low to see easily? We looked straight up.

High in the sky is the amazing yellow Capella (magnitude +0.05) in the constellation Auriga. One of the fun things about Capella is that it’s always there.
In fact, it is in the sky every night of the year, probably around the North Star, Polaris (for more information, read our guide on how to find Polaris.).

Although we like to think of Capella as the fifth star, in the northern part of July. You’ll see it again (she’s also one of my favorite stars of the summer, by the way).
Things are different in the southern part of the world. Canopus (mag 0.65) in the constellation Carina is the second brightest star in the southern sky and is closest to Sirius.
It will only be in the sky for a few nights in the southern autumn after Sirius leaves. When they are done, they head to Betelgeuse Kent (Alpha Centauri).

In the magazine. 0.1, is the third brightest in the sky and will hold that title until Canopus returns in October.
Back in the northern hemisphere, mid-May is a good time to chase the three stars beyond Sirius. They appeared simultaneously in the night sky.
Arcturus is in the south, at the end of the handle, Capella in the northwest, and Vega in the northeast.

If you’re headed to the beach, or lucky enough to have a spectacular sky and clear sky view, all four are in the sky at the end of March: Sirius in the southwest; Capella in the northwest; Vega in the northeast. ; and Arcturus in the east.
Every night of the year, all we have to do is look at some of them, and we get the brightest stars at night.

What’s In The Sky Tonight
Comets, asteroids and Near Earth Objects (NEOs) are not very visible if you can see them in the night sky.
Many will remember the appearance of Comet Hale-Bopp in the 1990s, or more recently, the beautiful appearance of Comet NEOWISE, which made headlines around the world and drew us all to look at the night sky.
For example, the asteroid Vesta is part of the asteroid belt and can be seen if you know where and when you can see it.

With all eyes on Comet C/2022 E3 ZTF and the increased possibility of sightings, it’s worth noting that there is another bright comet visible in January.
This Week’s Sky At A Glance, October 21
Comet C/2020 V2 ZTF begins on the moon north of Cepheus, about 7° from Polaris (alpha Ursa Minor (α)).
From here they travel south, very close to the mag. +2.7 Ruchbah (Delta (δ) Cassiopeiae), the end of the month 3° south of this star.
It has remained stable in its growth, with +9.3 at the beginning of the month and +9.2 at the end of the month. It’s on the edge of binocular vision, but a small telescope is the best way to go.

John Chumack took this image of Comet C/2020 V2 ZTF on November 26, 2022 from Yellow Springs, Ohio, USA. Equipment: TPO 12 “F4 Newtonian Reflector Telescope, Baader Coma Corrector, Software Bisque ME Mount, ZWO 294MC Cool Cmos Camera, L-Pro Filter.
The C/2020 V2 ZTF is very close to the mag. +5.3 40 Cassiopeia on the night of 1/11 then brings to orbit 1 ° west of the mag. +5.7 open star cluster Collinder 463 in Cassiopeia the following night (January 12-13). It differs from the mag by more than 0.5 °. +4.7 Psi (ψ) Cassiopeia on the night of January 17th.
Its southern path brought it within W Cassiopeia in the last week of January.
What’s That Bright Star Near The Moon?
On the night of January 23-24, it passed west of Magnetite. +9.6 Open cluster NGC 559.
The easiest time to catch the comet is on the night of January 27-28, when it will pass 15 minutes west of Ruchbah.
There is a bright Moon that is 42% bright in the sky today, but it is at midnight. Viewing after a full moon gives you the darkest sky and the best chance of seeing a comet.

C/2020 V2 ZTF was detected by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) in early November 2020 at magnitude 19. The comet will reach perihelion in May 2023.
Asteroid 532 Herculina will shine when it comes to opposition on December 2. + 10.1 as it moves from Orion to Taurus, where it spends most of December.
