Both conditions are treatable and highly comorbid.

Anxiety can appear as one of the symptoms of clinical depression and can also act as a trigger for it. Some people are diagnosed with both anxiety disorder and clinical depression, with women twice as likely as men to suffer from both generalized anxiety disorder and depression.
Depression is common and one of the most serious medical illnesses that negatively affects how a person feels, thinks and behaves. It causes feelings of sadness with or without loss of interest in activities we once enjoyed. There are many emotional and physical problems associated with depression or major depressive disorder that can negatively affect a person’s ability to function at work and at home. According to the WHO, an estimated 3.8% of the world’s population is affected by depression, including 5.0% among adults and 5.7% of adults over 60 years of age.

Anxiety, on the other hand, is a feeling of worry, fear, nervousness, or apprehension, usually associated with an impending event or something with an uncertain outcome. These feelings become a disorder when their quantity and frequency interfere with a person’s daily life activities.
Both conditions are different, but there are some symptoms of depression that are similar to anxiety disorders. These can be nervousness, irritability, fatigue and problems sleeping and concentrating.
Both anxiety disorders and depression occur during developmental stages, with the former typically beginning in preadolescence and early adolescence and the latter tending to emerge during adolescence and early to middle adulthood.
Depressed people move slowly, with flat and dull reactions. People with anxiety tend to be more agitated as they struggle to control their busy thoughts.

People with anxiety have the presence of fear of the future. Depressed people who do not have overlapping anxiety are less likely to worry about future events because they have a persistent belief that things will continue to be bad. The symptoms of both conditions usually improve with specialized psychological counseling (psychotherapy), medication such as antidepressants, or both. Lifestyle changes such as improving sleep habits, eating habits, increasing social/family support, engaging in stress management techniques, or exercising regularly also help control these conditions. Avoiding alcohol, smoking, and recreational drugs can also help, as they worsen any of these conditions and interfere with healing.
It’s normal to have the blues from time to time or to feel down from time to time. But if these persistent feelings become severe, it could be an underlying mental health disorder.

Coping With Covid: Depression And Anxiety
At a time when many people are mentally exhausted from a busy year filled with a global health pandemic, racial injustice, social unrest, a divisive political climate, and environmental concerns, it’s important to know the state of your mental health. Self-awareness of your own feelings and emotions is always critical, but especially during times of added stress outside of life’s typical ups and downs.
We spoke with Dr. Samia Hasan, director of mental health services at the IU School of Medicine, to help us recognize the symptoms of anxiety and depression in ourselves and how to deal with them.
Hassan shared an emotion self-monitoring checklist from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to help people identify emotional distress.
For anyone experiencing any of these signs and symptoms, Hasan recommends first reaching out to friends and family for support and engaging in healthy coping strategies such as moderate exercise, eating well, getting enough sleep, taking up a hobby or fun activity, and trying awareness. activities such as yoga or meditation.
Anxiety Vs. Depression: What Is The Relationship?
If the problem persists or gets to the point where it’s difficult for someone to manage daily activities, Hasan recommends seeking professional help.
Because the signs of depression and anxiety overlap, Hasan listed two screening tools called the PHQ-9 (for depression) and the GAD-7 (for anxiety), which are industry standards for primary care settings and useful for self-examination.
There are many tools for assessing one’s emotions. Hassan mentioned the Mental Health Continuum Model as another self-study resource people can use.

As the summer heat and sun fade, people need to continue to show self-awareness. The grayness and coldness that fall and winter bring can trigger seasonal affective disorder. Additionally, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, social isolation may increase in colder weather, with fewer opportunities for safe physical distancing and interaction with others outdoors.
