Contrary to what you might think there are three certainties in life. Death, taxes, and that a PQ leadership candidate will inevitably say something so stupid and misinformed that you are left scratching your head. The gathering of these great minds occurred recently when the PQ leadership candidates participated in a debate. I didn’t think it was possible to have so much stupid in one room. Once again, I was wrong.
Let’s begin with my good friend Martine Ouellet. In taking a page out of Donald Trump’s book , It’s true if you believe it is, Md Ouellet mistakingly said that other provinces in Canada enforce English-only signage. Her opponent Alexandre Cloutier pointed out that the Supreme Court of Canada ruled against this type of law because it restricts freedom of expression and he was booed for his efforts. Glad to see that she was so well informed and her reasoning behind her stance is so articulate: “I think it’s really important that the face of Quebec be French” she said. “Individual bilingualism is really, really good, but I would say that state bilingualism , that’s not good here in Quebec.” Thank you Md Ouellet for your insightfullness in such an important matter. I’ll sleep better tonight knowing that state bilingualism is not good for Quebec.
Not to be outdone in the stupid department, Alexandre Cloutier proposed a type of “cultural passport” for immigrants and students – he wants to give them 50$, but only to attend “francophone” cultural events. Why doesn’t he just promise 50$ to whoever contributes to the cultural genocide of the English culture in Quebec ?
Alas, the only bright side of the bunch, if there is one. Jean-Francois Lisée who calls for the status quo and admits that the French language and culture is not under threat. He is the one that I have always feared the most out of all of them. He’s smart, bilingual, and knows what to say and when to say it. Thankfully, the PQ is clueless and hasn’t put him at the helm.
I can’t believe that such brainless idiots still exist in Quebec politics. Here I was thinking that we had turned a corner and that the PQ have come to the realization that their platform is tired and outdated. But like a teenager with their first love, they just can’t let go. So they continue their search on who will bring them to the promised land. The only problem with that is that with every generation , the size of that promised land gets smaller and smaller.
