To celebrate a wonderful summer in Montreal, I thought it would be a great idea to count down my top summer losers of 2016. Without further ado, here we go.
Martine Ouellet, candidate to be the next Chef for the Parti Québécois.
– set aside up to $10 million for the creation of teams to represent Quebec on the international stage.
There is a small problem with this. Last time I checked Quebec isn’t a country and did she bother to ask the athletes who they want to represent ?
– Quebec would continue to use the Canadian dollar as currency.
This one is great yet another small problem. Do you think the country you just voted to secede from would make you use their currency ? Living in the real world is clearly not one of her strong attributes.
– hold a referendum on separation in her first mandate
She clearly learned nothing from her predecessor PKP. Maybe one of her advisors should tell her that the mere mention of a referendum is what caused PKP to lose in a landslide at the last provincial elections. Quebecers don’t want it, it’s not a feasible idea, so accept it and move on. Take the rest of the hardcore seperatist remaining in the party and go the way of the dodo bird.
Islam El Shehaby, Egyptian Olympic Judo athlete
This guy is a special kind of stupid. Islam El Shehaby declined to shake hands with his Israeli opponent after their match on Friday, eliciting jeers from the crowd. He was then sent home from the Egyptian contingency for his classless lack of sportsmanship. Mr El Shehaby, the Olympics was never and will never be a proper place to make a political statement or to show your racist side. Maybe he just didn’t like getting his ass handed to him by a Jew. Karma is beautiful !
Katrina Pierson, Trump spokesperson
This is my personal favourite. Donald Trump campaign spokeswoman Katrina Pierson said in a recent statement that the US’ military effort in Afghanistan “was Obama’s war.” Pierson’s comment came during an exchange with CNN’s Victor Blackwell, when she was asked to explain the Republican nominee’s recent assertion that President Obama is the “founder of ISIS.” I’m no historian but I can say with absolute certainty that the war in Afghanistan began in 2001, following the attacks of September 11, more than seven years before Barack Obama became president. The Afghanistan fight, initiated during the presidency of George W. Bush, stands as the longest running war in the history of the country. What I find so repulsive is that Trump’s camp can’t even lie properly. I didn’t realize that Trump’s entire staff have learning deficiencies in putting together chronological historical events. You’d think that somehow this would be part of the interview and hiring process.
It’s been a summer full of stupidity, racism, and divisive politics. I wonder how we can maintain our sanity in a world full of so much nonsense. I invite everyone to share their favourite losers of summer 2016.
