The great state of Mississippi recently passed a bill that allows businesses to refuse services to gay couples based on religious objections. This new law states that it protects “sincerely held religious beliefs or moral convictions” including the belief that marriage is only between a man and a woman and that sexual relations should only occur in such a marriage. It goes on to add to it’s absurdity by saying that a person’s gender is “determined by anatomy and genetics at time of birth” and goes on to say that businesses can determine who is allowed to access bathrooms, dressing rooms and locker rooms.
Let me call this law what it truly is, an open ticket for state-sanctioned discrimination. How is this any different from the era of segregation of African Americans ?
“Racial segregation was a system derived from the efforts of white Americans to keep African Americans in a subordinate status by denying them equal access to public facilities and ensuring that blacks lived apart from whites. During the era of slavery, most African Americans resided in the South, mainly in rural areas.”
Do you see the resemblance between the two ? It is discrimination based solely on the colour of your skin, sexual orientation, religion, etc. It is based on hatred, ignorance , and that somehow how you live your life can impact a business owner’s decision to offer you a service. Why one state would want to create new wounds when the wounds of the past have yet to heal is beyond comprehension.
In essence, this bill says that an individual’s religious beliefs takes precedence over the basic human rights of another. I’m in disbelief that the state garnered enough votes to pass such a bill. I’m in disbelief that such a law would even be drafted as legislation. Above all, I’m in disbelief that governor Phil Bryant signed off with his approval. He had received tremendous pressure to veto the bill but chose to ignore it. He chose to throw common decency and humanity out the window. Somewhere in the deepest abyss of hell, lies a special spot reserved for this piece of shit and all the other conservative right-wing nut jobs.
Let me remind you in the most cheeky way possible that Mississippi is a state within the United States of America. The state of Mississippi has managed to undo decades of progress and struggle for the LGBT community. I’m sad that I’m alive to see such an idea even see the light of day but devastated to see it become law.
